I have to admit, it wasn’t easy becoming a skilled HVAC technician. I just want young people out there who are thinking about getting into the HVAC industry to have some hope. I honestly was really good when it came to studying about various HVAC systems and learning about HVAC installations. I was great with all of the HVAC terms, and I thought school wasn’t so challenging. I was able to get my HVAC certification, but then came the real challenge. When I was first training, my HVAC trainer was really hard on me. He had me jump right into the HVAC work acting like I should already know what I was doing. Sure, I knew about HVAC systems on paper, but I didn’t really know anything I realized. My trainer kind of had the notion that the best way to learn was to jump right in without any real assistance. He wouldn’t even answer my questions when I tried asking, I just had to figure it all out. Then at the end of the day, he would tell me how he knew I tried my best, but my best wasn’t good enough. Well, eventually everything started to click and I realized that the knowledge was in me, and I started making it all work for me. Eventually, I was doing better work than my HVAC trainer. I think that made him jealous and he still spoke to me like I didn’t know what I was doing. Now, having worked for so many years, I’m training more people than my original trainer, and my trainees thrive because I actually teach them how to work on HVAC systems!
