I grew up in a low income family with few resources to our name.
We lived in a two-bedroom farmhouse that had a leaking roof and windows that wouldn’t shut completely. But at the time, I didn’t know anything different because most of my friends lived in similar conditions. Everybody lived in old farm houses that were rickety and run down. I was just the norm for that sort of area. But all of us may do with what we had at the time. And inside of our homes, we didn’t worry about not having modern amenities. We had running water and indoor plumbing and that’s all that really mattered to us at the time. We had a fireplace to keep us warm in the winter season when it would get cold outside. We would harvest wood from fallen trees on our property, cut them up, and then store them for the Autumn, winter, and early spring. In the absence of an indoor air conditioner, we would open our Windows to let in the breeze and then distribute the air using fans. We had ceiling fans in almost every room and box fans that we would put in doorways to keep air moving in and out. This is just how you would survive with the lack of air conditioning. Nowadays I’m lucky to live in good housing with modern amenities. I have a three bedroom house with two bathrooms and a central furnace and air conditioning system. It’s really nice having all of these features inside my current home. However, the air conditioner is not very good compared to most modern air conditioners. It’s so bad at distributing air throughout the house that I’m using fans like I did when I was a kid. I don’t mind though because it’s cheaper than buying a brand new air conditioner right now.
