Mold on my window unit air conditioner

A few days ago, I noticed something gross on the window sill in my bedroom. It has been very hot and rainey where I live lately, and I thought that maybe some dirt from the garden was blown on to the outside of the window. I forgot about seeing this for a while and went about my day. Around noon, I walked back in the bedroom and saw the gross black spot on the window unit air conditioner. I was very concerned that this spot might grow bigger and I would not be able to get rid of it. I had heard of people battling with mold spots for weeks and they always come back. I decided to do some research. First, I turned the window unit AC to the off setting and checked that the air conditioner was unplugged. Next, I changed into some clothes I was not worried about ruining. I was working with harsh chemicals to clean the window unit air conditioner and did not want to take any chances. Last, I removed the filter from the AC unit and sprayed it with bleach outside. I was working under great conditions. The weather was perfect and sunny. I planned on disassembling the window unit air conditioner and bleaching every inch of it. While I was in the middle of this project, I realized that I did not know how to remove the window unit air conditioner from the window. I had to call my neighbor to come help. He brought all the necessary tools and helped me clean the window unit air conditioner.
