Earlier this year we had to replace our garage door opener.
The new unit included WiFi capabilities to open and close the door remotely using our smart phone.
Remote operation is certainly convenient for a forgetful person like me because it allows me to double check myself. It is also just fun to use! I have seen whole house WiFi systems recently at several big box stores and now I am thinking of the possibility of a WiFi controlled thermostat for my HVAC system. The thought of being able to control the air conditioner or heater in my home with my phone or laptop is intriguing. I would have complete control over the temperature in my home. I would never have to come home to a house that was too hot or too cold again. I could sleep with a lower temperature and have my thermostat heat my home before the alarm went off. I could control the HVAC unit if there were unexpected temperature changes during the day or if my schedule changed. I could reduce my home energy consumption because I could regulate the heating and cooling to start or stop working when I needed, not based on a preset thermostat setting. Regulating the HVAC with a WiFi thermostat would be an easy first step to having a “smart” home. Not only could we control the heating and cooling with our smart phones when we were out, we could also control the HVAC with a voice assistant such as Alexa or Google Assistant without ever having to leave the sofa.
