Storms Can Wreak Havoc with Air Ducts Too

Living where we do, there is always the potential for the effects of a tropical storm to deal with.

We have always been fairly lucky if a named storm was in the area.

Usually we might get the remnants of the system but never had to endure the full strength of one of these big storms. So, this is why I staid home with the pets when the last storm went through. While we remained fairly unscathed, it was quite a harrowing experience. The house sustained mainly minor damage due to the high winds. However, I didn’t realize how the force of those sustained winds could affect my HVAC components. The outside unit got through just fine. However, the ducts in the attic didn’t fair so well. The bad thing was, I didn’t initially realize it until it was a bit too late. The pressure changes and the wind moved the house more than I thought was possible. This resulted in the air ducts being moved around as the attic and roof heaved. This resulted in gaps between the joints of the air ducts. These gaps were soon infiltrated by all kinds of bugs. It was certainly not a pretty picture. Fortunately, my HVAC company was able to schedule a sister company to come out and thoroughly clean our ducts. I was appalled by the amount of trash and debris that this crew was pulling from our ducts. After the ducts were cleaned, the crew professionally resealed all the joints that had been affected. I’m thankful the storm didn’t rip off our roof but I was not so happy about what it did to my air ducts.
