I currently have a toilet that whistles.
It still functions but I’m worried about getting into a very bad situation.
I’ve noticed that I now need to hold the handle down and count slowly to twelve to get the toilet to completely flush. About fifty percent of the time, not everything disappears with a single flush. I sometimes need to wait for the toilet to quit running and then flush a second time. This process is wasting a tremendous amount of water. I am hoping to avoid scheduling a repair with a professional plumber if possible. I can’t really afford the time or money involved but going without a toilet isn’t an option. I need to address the malfunctioning toilet as soon as possible. I’ve done some research into how to handle the problem myself. A google article told me to check the water level in the toilet tank. I removed the cover, looked inside and found a marked indicator for the water line. It looked fine to me, but I went ahead and adjusted the float anyway. The float is a rubber ball supported by a metal arm. I was able to use a screwdriver to turn a screw and elevate the float a bit. This adjustment didn’t solve the issues. The next troubleshooting option was the toilet flapper or rubber seal that plugs a hole at the bottom of the tank. Any damage to the flapper can cause water to leak out of the tank. There can also be a concern with the flapper chain being too long or too short. I fiddled around with that for a while and accomplished nothing. I’ve now decided that I should invest in a new toilet. The existing toilet was in place when I purchased the home over ten years ago. Rather than waste money on an expensive repair, I would prefer to have a new, more energy efficient option installed.
