No one told me I had to take tests in HVAC school.

I was enjoying HVAC classes for the first six weeks, and that’s when I fell apart.

I always had trouble while in school, because you had to take tests.

The only way I could take a test was if it was verbal, or I took it with no one around. I never expected to need to take tests when I was going to HVAC school. I expected hands-on training where the instructor would watch me do an inspection or make a repair, but I wasn’t sitting in class. I was working alone and being observed. Other people were working on their own projects. When I was told I was going to need to take a written test; I panicked. I told the instructor I couldn’t take the test. He asked me what was wrong? I explained to him I panicked when I had to take tests. He asked if I would feel more comfortable going to the back room and taking the test on my own. I knew I could do it, but I preferred a verbal test. He said that wasn’t something they did very often, but he wanted me to succeed. He then told me I had to take a certification test before I could get my HVAC certification. He told me the key to passing was to tune out everything around me and just do my best. He had faith in me being an HVAC technician, and I had to have faith in me. He told me that once I found faith in myself, I would be one of the best HVAC technicians in his company. He actually invited me to work for him.
