A/C dies from lack of maintenance

Our air conditioner has not been working well for over a year now. It sounds like it is working really hard but it barely keeps the house comfortable. The air conditioner almost never reaches our thermostat setting of 75 degrees either. Then, this June, we noticed that our bedroom wasn’t getting cooled at all. In fact, no cold air was coming out of any of the vents on the west side of the house. Finally, we called out an HVAC company to figure out what was going on. Honestly, I thought our HVAC system just needed cleaning or that maybe the ductwork needed cleaning. It turned out to be much worse. The HVAC technicians said that our ductwork was full of water. The water was coming from the HVAC system. The plastic ductwork under the house was bowing under the weight of the water. In fact, in some places the ductwork had pulled away from the vents. Additionally, our air conditioner had had to work so hard over the past year that the motor was now damaged. The HVAC company suggested getting a complete air conditioner replacement along with a ductwork replacement. I couldn’t believe it! This huge expense probably could have been avoided if we had just called a year ago when the air conditioner first started to give us trouble. Because we waited so long, now we have to pay thousands of dollars for a new air conditioner. I can tell you that we won’t be making that mistake again. The new air conditioner comes with a 2 year maintenance plan. Once it expires, I am going to pay to keep the maintenance plan going. We need to keep this air conditioner working.
