Heat pump can’t handle cold snap

When our fiance & I retired from our jobs, all of us decided to transfer further south.

  • We’d spent too multiple years dealing with the sub zero temperatures & snowfall up north.

We were ready to throw out the ice scraper, snow shovel & wool coats. We were gleeful to trade the furnace for an a/c & the heavy boots for sandals. We moved just far enough south where the weather would cool off a bit in the Wintertide however never snow on us. We didn’t want to need to rely on the a/c all year round. The loft all of us purchased is equipped with a easily seasoned heat pump. The majority of the time, all of us run the program on cooling mode. It operates just love a conventional a/c, providing plenty of cool air to keep our small loft comfortable. It’s rather noisy however is reliable & energy efficient. We doubted we’d run the program in heating mode easily often. However, the easily first Wintertide all of us spent in our up-to-date house, there was an unprecedented cold snap. The temperature dropped down into the thirties for the first time in over fifty years, however our heat pump iced over & wouldn’t run at all. We visited every store in the area, trying to buy space heating systems with no luck, then my fiance & I ended up outside trying to thaw out the heat pump with hair dryers. Our loft was cold cold & all of us needed our hot jackets & wool coats again. We’ve now lived in the loft for five years. We have purchased multiple backup space heaters, just in case all of us encounter another Wintertide cold snap.
